ADCC 2009 is now a part of history. With the champions, runners-up and bronze medalists defined, we can now update our ADCC athletes ranking.

The following special prizes were defined:

Most technical athlete 2009: Braulio Estima

Best fight 2009: Marcelo Garcia vs. Kron Gracie

We also imput four points of the best fight of 2007 (Braáulio vs. Xande).

The new numbers show Marcelo Garcia in the lead, 12 points ahead of the runner-up. They also show how Braulio Estima moved up the most places. He jumped from 47th to 13th. The overall ranking now includes 76 athletes. Brazilians maintain dominion, with 16 names among the top 20.

The following points criteria were applied:

3.Supermatch champion – 15pts

4.Absolute runner-up – 13pts

5.Category runner-up  – 11pts

6.Supermatch runner-up – 9pts

7.Absolute third place – 7pts

In the event of a draw in points, the athlete with the win of greater worth will take the lead. For example, even if drawn on points, the athlete with an absolute title will be ahead of the athlete who was a category champion.

Hannette Staack will remember that on this day she became two-time ADCC champion of the over 60kg category, when she insisted on a kneebar till the headstrong Penny Thomas tapped.

Luana Alzuguir will also remember fondly here campaign in the under 60kg. In the final, Alliance’s golden girl (the only gold-winning team member this ADCC) beat a game Sayaka Shioda by 3 to 0 by taking the Japanese grappler’s back.

On this day, Marcelo Garcia lost for the first time in the ADCC at his weight. Pablo Popovitch will remember the last 30 seconds of the under 77kg final, when he put all he had left into passing the three-time champion’s guard to take first place. Popovitch will remember that this was the third final in a row between the two, in the world cup of grappling. It’s 2 x 1 for the Alliance rep, but 2011 isn’t that far off.

Rafael Mendes will also remember the final minute of the under 66kg decider. He’ll recall how the match was drawn at 4 to 4, already in overtime, when he managed to make it to Cobrinha’s back, to make it 7 to 4 and take the gold. Before that, Rafa will remember that he submitted two-time champion Leo Vieira.

Xande Ribeiro will remember the strategy that put the brakes on the revelation of the event, Gerard Rinaldi, winner of the west coast USA trials, who dispatched favorites left and right in making it to the under 99kg final. Despite his disappointment in the absolute, Xande will cherish his second title in the event.

Fabricio Werdum will remember the title he conquered at home. The second championship that he controlled the over 99kg category of and the stands of the Pavilion that he galvanized. The fans he lent to friends while they competed.

Braulio Estima will have the greatest memories of the Sunday, September 27, that he spent in Barcelona. He’ll remember the dream day he spent in the same gymnasium a certain Dream Team enchanted the world in 17 years earlier. Braulio was nearly perfect. In the under 88kg category he caught the foot of Lovato. Then, he clamped a sightly triangle on Andre Galvao, for the gold.

In the absolute, the dream turned to reality. In less than a minute, he extended the arm of Finland’s Janne-Pekka. Then, he squeezed on the neck of Marcelo Garcia and scored 7 to 0 over Vinicius Magalhaes.

When asked about the final of the absolute, Braulio will remember that he went after Xande from the start, that he nearly got the finish with a beautiful triangle and later with an arm attack. He’ll also remember that Xande’s bad luck was his good fortune whenhis adversary gave up, betrayed by an arm injury.

When asked speak of his time winning his weight and the absolute categories of the ADCC, repeating the feat of Ze Mario (1998), Mark Kerr (2000) and Roger Gracie (2005), perhaps Braulio will break into tears like he did in the gymnasium in Barcelona. It’s also possible that time will bring Braulio to believe in his own achievement, which he hadn’t managed to do yet as he exited the Badalona Municipal Pavilion.

ADCC 2009 has a grand champion. Besides taking the under 88kg title, Braulio Estima defeated Xande Ribeiro to take the absolute one too.

“I just want to say that I could never have done it alone. I had lots of help. It’s not fair to claim victory for myself. I trained all I could. All my students helped me. My brother and coaches helped me in the gym. I’m always learning. I’m really happy, I had lots of support. My time has come. I trained really hard for this. I feel I performed well. I’d like to thank my wife, who gave me a lot of massages. I thank Ze Radiola, Roger Gracie, for the support,” said the champion.

In tears, Braulio went on: “To my father, my mother, my whole family. This is for you. Now I’m going to take a vacation. I’ll go to Brazil on Wednesday to see my parents. I want to send a big kiss to my son Julian. He will be really proud that I did what I did. I’m happy to have competed at a good level,” he finished.

Braulio finds a path to his lethal inverted triangle early in the match. Xande has an overall good defense and with one his arms is kind of defending it. Triangle is fully locked now but Xande stands, shakes it and defends.

They end in Braulio’s guard, but Xande hurts his right shoulder and gives up.

Bráulio wins the absolute!

And carries Jacare to the center of the fight area to provoke him.

Theoretically, they will meet each other in the ADCC 2011. We’ll see you guys there!

Vini is playing guard, Gunnar is looking for Pesao’s back. Vinicius tries to find a leg or an arm, Gunny keeps posture (and balance). They must be really, really tired by now. This is the sixth match for Magalhaes this Sunday. And Gunnar’s fourth, among them one big overtime battle against Jeff Monson.

Gunnar puts pressure on Vini, who turns back to him. Now Vinicius is in turtle position, and Gunnar is trying to put in his hooks. Magalhães escapes trading position with Gunnar, and raises him really high in a suplex attempt. Gunnar is back at a back attack attempt when time ends. 0-0. Overtime is on.

Gunnar quickly manages to get the same position, controlling Vinicius who is turtling. They get back to their feet. Vinicius takes Gunnar down but is unable to hold him for three seconds to score. Pace slows as we get deep in the overtime and Vinicius scores a takedown in the last seconds to win bronze.

What a great show these guys put up. A quick recap here: Vinicius only lost to the very guys who are disputing the final now (Xande in the <99kg semi and Braulio in the absolute semi).

In the other area, Xande pulls Gunnar into his guard, a strategy that has truly worked thus far in this tournament. Underdog Gunnar threatens Xande’s back, but the 2008 and 2006 Jiu-Jitsu Absolute World Champion defends and connects a straight knee bar, tapping Iceland’s representative. Xande is the first absolute finalist.

On their feet, Vinicius Magalhaes and Chris Weidman. As quick as a bolt, Vini snags the armbar and is in the semis against Braulio.

In the third match, Xande goes against Galvão. Xande starts better, taking Galvao down, but no points are been counted yet. Now Xande plays guard. Sweeps. They both stand with Xande attempting to take Galvao’s back. Xande is leading 3-0 and they are towed to the middle. Time ends and Xande wins.

In the last match of the quarters, Gunnar Nelson faces David Avellan. It takes a while, but Gunnar manages the takedown and ends up in Avellan’s half guard. Avellan nearly sweep but Nelson scrambles, gets t0 his feet and takes Avellan down. Back in half guard. Avellan goes for the sweep but didn’t manage to finish it. They are trading takedowns, with an apparent advantage for Gunnar. Nelson takes Avellan down, takes the back and taps Avellan.

A 10-minutes break for the award ceremonies. Look at the semifinals ahead:

Marcelinho is on the mat against Bruno Bastos. Marcelinho finds his pace in overtime, scoring a sweep, passes, taking the back and sinking a choke.

We also have Vinicius Magalhães and Dean Lister in action, against each other. Vini gets the better by referee decision.

Chris Weidman is now against Antoine Jaoude. Both wrestlers are standing. And keep on it for the first period. Weidman takes Jaoude’s back (3-0). Jaoude escapes and takes the t-shirt off. Time ends, better for Weidman.

Xande Ribeiro faces a skinny Ricco Rodriguez. Xande plays from the guard, goes for the back standing, tries to take the back on the ground and ends up on top. He then taps Rodriguez with a kimura, from the half-guard.

Tom DeBlass and Andre Galvao do battle. Galvão sweeps. DeBlass goes for the heel hook. Galvão escapes and sits, playing guard. Tom insists on heel hooks attempts, André Galvão handles it and takes DeBlass’ back and wins.

Jeff Monson is against Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson. Gunnar defends guard and attacks Monson’s back nicely towards the end of the first period. Monson scrambles and escapes. Monson goes for the single leg, Gunnar counters with another back attempt, they come out of the area. Overtime. Gunnar keeps pushing Monson, despite the huge weight difference. Monson is in a back attempt, but Nelson frees himself. Gunnar takes the back, scores (3-0) and taps Monson with a kimura.

Over 99kg finalist Roberto Cyborg is taking on David Avellan in the last fight of the absolute first phase. Cyborg is trailing 0-2 but takes Avellan off balance and scores 3 points when get his back. 3-2 and now Avellan is trying to pass. Cyborg is punished with -1 and now it is even (3-3). Overtime. Cyborg takes Avellan down but no points yet. They scramble and are on their feet again.  David Avellan gets the decision.

Considered the category of greatest prestige of ADCC 2009, the men’s absolute should begin shortly.

Up until now the ADCC organization has not released the brackets, but we will publish them as soon as they’ve been released.

Hannette Staak takes Penny Thomas’ back at the beginning of the match and keeps it for a lot of time. Eventually Penny manages to escape but Staak connects with a knee bar attempt. The girls battle from this position until the end, and Staak comes out on top, submitting Thomas with a straight knee bar and conquering her division again.

Under 60kg

Sayaka Shioda begins with a footlock attempt but Luanna Alzuguir scrambles and escapes, getting top position. Luanna is looking for the pass, goes for a back attempt but ends up on bottom. Shioda is warned by the referee. Luanna sweeps. After a while, Shioda is able to attempt the fooft attack and stands. Luanna goes for the guillotine but Shioda frees her head. Luanna is on top, working in Shioda’s guard, sometimes open, sometimes closed. Shioda manage to land a heel hook, and they roll up to the end of the mats, but Luana escapes and keeps trying the pass. They are back on their feet. Now Shioda is on top, in Luanna’s closed guard.

With a beautiful move, Luana goes from closed guard straight to Shioda’s back and opens the scoring (3-0). Shioda escapes, but Luanna is taking the back again as time ends. Luanna Alzuguir is the -60kg champion.

20-minute break for the men’s absolute!

The first one is Fabricio Werdum against Roberto Cyborg. Cyborg started off better, took Werdum’s back and almost mounted. Roberto then went for a triangle and Werdum escaped, getting top position. It is a 20-minute battle and Cyborg spent lots of energy right off the bat.

Werdum controlled in half guard for pretty much most of the time before the scoring started, and passed twice to open a 6-0 lead. 9-0. Same recipe, back to the half and passed again. “Cavalo” (“Horse”) is getting close to his second victory. And there you have it. Fabricio Werdum is the over 99kg champion.

Werdum, who now lives in the US but resided in Madrid for years, then goes for a speech in Spanish, thanking all “catalonians”.

Xande Ribeiro and Gerard Rinaldi are now battling for the -99kg gold. Xande is in an under hook half guard. Rinaldi seems stable. Now Xande goes for a deep half guard, and Rinardi looks for a kneebar attempt. Xande defends and gets top position. Rinaldi amazingly goes for an omoplata and is able to stand.

Half guard again, now Rinaldi tries a kimura, Xande almost ends on top. Back in Xande’s 1/2 guard. Xande finally gets a sweep (2-0) but Rinaldi scrambles and is back on top. Rinaldi attacks Xande’s back, but the current champion defends well and almost goes on top. Rinaldi is now trying a kimura, Xande defends and almost sweeps. It’s a chess game, not really active but very technical. Xande is capitalizing on Rinaldi’s attacks and he’s the champion.

Andre Galvao and Braulio Estima engage. Romulo Barral is commentating on the webcast. Galvao pulls guard. Braulio goes for the footlock, but Galvao defends well. Now it’s Galvao’s turn for the foot attack, but Braulio is able to defend as well and he’s still on top. Another sweep attempt connecting to a leg attack by Andre, but Braulio handles it.

Nice attempts by both sides. Galvao sweeps, Braulio goes for an armbar and they are back on their feet. Galvao is playing guard again. They stand, and Braulio takes Galvao down, but they are not counting points yet. Galvao sweeps back. Galvao tries to pass, but Braulio countered with a nasty inverted triangle and TAPS Galvao!

Braulio is the <88kg champion.

Pablo Popovitch starts taking Marcelo Garcia down immediately but Garcia quickly goes for an armbar and sweeps. Expect lots of action in this one. Pablo is back on top, Garcia heel hooks and sweeps again. The champion goes for a crucifix, a back attempt and he’s back in Pablo’s guard. Popovitch sweeps beautifully. Fight calms down, Marcelo kind of got stuck on bottom, 0-0 so far.

Garcia opens the scoring with an omoplata sweep (2-0). They both stand. Garcia pulls guard right away. Popovitch stops the match for the second time claiming a poke to his left eye. Action resumes with Pablo frustrated inside’s Garcia’s open guard, not heading anywhere. Popovitch PASSES in the last second, scores three points and he is the new <77kg champion!

Here we go, another bout between Rubens Cobrinha and Rafael Mendes. Mendes is a black belt for a year and has fought Cobrinha five times already, the fourth, before this one, with a gi. Cobrinha starts with a takedown, but no points are being counted in the first 10 minutes and Rafa comes with the first submission attempts. First he gives Cobrinha trouble with a d’arce choke. Cobrinha escapes somehow. Mendes then heel hooks him. Cobrinha defends and he is still in the game. They are standing, Cobrinha goes for a beatiful sweep but Mendes counters with another tight d’arce choke. It takes a while, but Cobrinha frees his head again.

In their previous matches, Cobrinha always complained that Rafael was trying just to hold him down but I don’t think he could say the same for this one. So far, all submission attempts were from Mendes. They are now standing. 0-0. They exchange sweeps, Mendes ends on top. Cobrinha now goes for the heel hook and they roll across the entire area once. The referee stops it and gets them back to the same position and the same thing happens. They get back to rolling again and Cobrinha switches for a sweep attempt. And gets it. Mendes keeps his attacks, now a weird kimura with Cobrinha’s leg locked, which Cobrinha escapes. Mendes sweeps and goes for another choke but Cobrinha escapes and sweeps back, scoring the points also (4-4). They go for the overtime.

Overtime is all both guys standing so far. Nothing happens and they go for the second overtime. Pretty boring, with Mendes playing guard, until he gets the sweep, and takes Cobrinha’s back standing! 3-0 but he doesn’t stop, locks in the body triangle and keeps trying for the choke on the ground. Time ends and Rafael Mendes is the <66kg champion. Remarkable victory for the young kid, who went after victory from the start.

Cyborg won the bronze over Rosangela in the heaviest weight.

Jeff Monson took the bronze in the judges decision (+99kg) and Saulo, after remembering the first 40-minutes bout they had in 1999, announced his retirement from the ADCC.

David Avellan was real quick against Lovato, submitting him with a leglock at -88kg.

Gregor Gracie debuted in the ADCC with the bronze medal under 77kg, after taking Nakamura’s back and winning by 10 points.

After the absence of Leo Vieira and Rani Yahya, Ryan Hall and Jeff Glover fought for the bronze at -66kg and Hall started out  losing but rallied and took the victory in the last seconds, taking Glover’s back and  winning 3 to 2.

A few comments about the semis:

• Werdum and Saulo went to the second overtime before judges decided for Werdum’s victory.
• Cyborg came strong and took the great Jeff Monson out of the event.
• Xande Ribeiro looks for his second title in the under 99kg category, and he will have the US East Coast trials winner as his opponent. Rinardi, from Silver Fox Renzo Gracie, is impressive in the event so far.
• Braulio Estima submitted Rafael Lovato with a kneebar, whilst Galvão had a tough, really tough match against David Avellan, decided by only 2 points.
• Smooth. That is the word for superstar Marcelo Garcia, who tapped Nakamura and always makes everything looks really easy.
• Pablo Popovitch took Gregor Gracie’s back and is in the final against Garcia for the third time in a row.
• Cobrinha vs Rafa Mendes. How good is that? The two current best in Jiu-Jitsu are also the ADCC under -66kg finalists. And both tapped their opponents. Cobrinha took out former 2007 champion Yahya and Rafa tapped two-time former champion Leo Vieira.

For the women, Hannete is in the final against Penny Thomas in the heaviest way.

And, at the same time Luanna submits Laurence Cousin with a rear-naked choke to face Shioka in the final, Saulo Ribeiro enters the mat area wearing a gi to face Jeff Monson for the bronze. Follow that one in the next post.

Marcelo Garcia is the greatest star of the style, no doubt about it. He’s treated like a pop star and gets no rest from handing out autographs and posing for pictures. Even so, the last image captured by GRACIEMAG.com on Saturday was of the Brazilian on his feet in a subway car in Barcelona, returning to the Hilton hotel, where the athletes are being put up.

Before that, in the competition are, Marcelo gave another two demonstrations of why he’s so venerated. In the first match of the under 77kg category, all the announcer had to do was say his name to drive the crowd wild. The performance that followed put them over the top. Explosive as always, Garcia caught Rodney Ellis in a lightning-quick guillotine.

The second time Marcelo was summoned the name of his opponent caused frisson in the crowd too. At the other end was Kron Gracie. Marcelinho’s experience and Kron’s youth suggested it would be an uneven match, as the ADCC’s white mat is Garcia’s second home. But Rickson Gracie’s son wasn’t worried about that and set off on the attack. Evenly matched from beginning to end and very lively, the match was only decided in overtime, when Garcia finally managed to impose his pace and finish with yet another guillotine. In the end both were applauded for the best bout of Saturday.

On Wednesday the 23rd, Romulo barrel was in Los Angeles, still without an invite to ADCC 2009. This Saturday, at around 4pm, Barral sat alone on a chair facing the competition where he had another of the matches of the day, his quarterfinal against Saulo Ribeiro, two-time champion of the event who is still in the running for a third in a third category.

Romulo was surely running through the last thirty seconds of the match in his mind. He would have won because Saulo had suffered two negative points when the Royler Gracie student managed to land outside Barral’s guard and score the three points that defined the combat. Such was Saulo’s excitement that he let out a yell after it was done, so big an obstacle Romulo was in Xande’s brother’s journey.

In the same over 99kg category, current champion Fabricio Werdum spent a lot more time stirring up his huge fan base and lending them to others than competing. Placed on the less tricky side of the bracket, Werdum is in the semis, where he will face the very Saulo.

Cobrinha, Rani, Leo (photo) and Rafael Mendes. The four Brazilians will dispute the under 66kg semis this Sunday. The favorites left no room for any dark horse nor bad luck. On the other hand, Barret Yoshida lost right in his first match, to Justin Rader.

The math showed there’s a 25% chance the under 88kg category will involve Andre Galvao and Braulio Estima. The cold numbers, though, don’t take into account that the two showed the best games in the category to this moment. Tarsis Humphreys, who was on the list of favorites for the semis, was surprised by always tough David Avellan, who squeezed on his neck from behind.

Pe de Pano was another favorite for the semis who got left along the way. In the quarters, the over 99kg champion in 2003 was surprised by a sightly flying armbar from Vinicius Magalhaes, who now will face off against Xande Ribeiro, who had a trickier time in his first match, but went on to catch Radek Turek’s arm in the quarters. Another surprise in the category was Gerard Rinaldi. The West Coast USA trials winner is in the semis, where he will meet his first Brazilian of the tournament, Glover Teixeira, who dispatched none other than Dean Lister.

With all respect to the talent of Ronaldo Jacare and Robert Drysdale, who have nothing more to prove, Roger Gracie was sorely missed in the supermatch. The bout ended in Jacare’s favor but didn’t please the public. Jacare took it with a takedown, but the bout will not live on in the memories of those who watched it.

The ladies only had one match each. The favorites didn’t have much problem guaranteeing their places in the semis of the two categories. It is worth mentioning Rosangela Conceicao’s win over absolute world champion Lana Stefanac and Bianca Andrade’s loss.

Tomorrow are the semifinals and absolute.

The first day of ADCC 2009 was one of intense emotion, both for those present at the Badalona Sports Pavilion, in Barcelona, and those keeping up with the goings-on via GRACIEMAG.com.

Ronaldo Jacare won the supermatch against Robert Drysdale and the semifinals for both men and women have been defined.

After a round-of-eight with few surprises, the classics started to unfold among the four survivors in each category.

The first to take place was between Saulo Ribeiro and Romulo Barral. The seasoned Saulo showed a young man’s physical conditioning in passing guard and scoring enough points to eliminate the current medium heavyweight world champion of Jiu-Jitsu.

A strong candidate for best submission of the event arose in the under 99kg quarterfinals. With a sensational flying armbar, Vinicius Magalhaes submitted two-time absolute JJ world champion (2003/2004) Marcio “Pe de Pano” Cruz.

The big surprise of the day came when David Avellan dispatched Tarsis Humphreys in with a rear-naked choke in the under 88kg quarterfinals.

In a hotly-disputed match only decided in overtime, Marcelo Garcia had his hands full with a game Kron Gracie, before sinking a guillotine from the mount.

Among the lightest, all the favorites won without great difficulty and the semis offers up two true classics.

The first day of weight-group disputes is now over and Robert Drysdale and Ronaldo Jacare had their ADCC 2009 supermatch.

Drysdale earned his place in the match after winning the absolute division in 2007, while Jacare came in as a substitute for an injured Roger Gracie.
Jacare was runner-up in 2005, having lost to the very Roger he replaces in the grand finale.

Jacare gained the upper hand over Drysdale, winning 2 to 0 on the score cards.

How it went:

Jacare started out playing on top, but without offering much danger. With both again on their feet, Jaca managed to land a takedown, working from atop his adversary. Relying on his famed explosiveness, Jacare upheld the attack, but Drysdale annulled his attempts well.

With both again standing, Jacare took the chance to go for an inside-trip takedown. With Drysdale again standing, the two spent a good while trading grips.

With the first five minutes over and points now counting, Jacare took the initiative and barely missed landing another takedown. It was Drysdale’s turn to go on the attack and stir up the crowd. Jacare managed to defend well, though, and the two went back to trading grips.
